Breast cancer is basically a tumor, which is considered as malignant that starts from the breast cells. A malignant tumor is actually a group of cancer cells that can invade the surrounding tissues or spread to the other parts of the body. It mostly occurs in women but men could also get it.

 

What Causes Breast Cancer?

Although the exact cause of the development of breast cancer is still unknown, studies have found out that there are certain risk factors that make one truly susceptible from it.

The following are considered as risk factors for breast cancer:

  • Contraceptive pills
  • Excessive intake of saturated animal fats
  • Alcohol
  • Dairy products
  • Pesticides. Residues of these that make way into the food chain can cause cancer.

  • Low intake of antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables

  • Lumps, usually located in the underarm area
  • Thickening of the skin on the breast

Foods to Avoid

  • Animal fats. These foods should be eaten at minimal levels. If you really want to, eat organic meats.
  • Alcohol. Lessen your intake of alcohol. It should not be more than 1 unity in a single day.
  • Dairy. Reduce your intake of dairy products especially those from cows, goats or sheep. If you really need to eat these products, make sure they’re low fat.
  • Unfermented soya. This causes hormone activity.
  • Fried foods.

  • Organic foods. You can be assured that organic foods do not have any chemicals like pesticides in them. Therefore, you would not be taking in cancer-causing chemicals which are primarily found in these pesticides.
  • Soya beans, lentils, beans, chickpeas, and fermented soya products like tempeh can help in lowering the risk for breast cancer. In fact, there is a low number of women having breast cancer in countries like Japan and Thailand. This is often due to their regular intake of fermented soya based foods. Soya-based foods are rich in genistein, which actually inhibits the growth of cancerous cells.
  • Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and also alfalfa sprouts, have substances that can protect from breast cancer.
  • Raw linseeds or flax seeds, can be sprinkled regularly onto meals can help in protecting the breast tissue.
  • Eat more essential fatty acids. These are usually found in fish oil.
  • Organic raw carrots, apple, cabbage, fresh root ginger, radish, celery, and raw beetroot, juiced together can give your body the nutrients it needs.

  • Isoflavone supplements. You can take this if you are not really fond of eating soya-based foods.
  • Vitamin C in ascorbate form (5g – 10g daily for a few weeks). If you get to experience loose bowel movements in this dose, cut your intake by 500mg. 1g daily is idea for maintenance.
  • Antioxidant formula containing Vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium.
  • Reishi, maitake, and shiitake mushrooms taken three times a day in tablet form. These have been known to increase the immune system and inhibit cancer cells from growing and spreading out.
  • Take multi-vitamins and minerals.
  • Indole 3 Carbinol, otherwise known as 13C (2 – 3 times per day). This is a phytochemical that was isolated from various cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, turnips, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, green cabbage, pak choy, mustard, and many others. This has been known to inhibit the growth of oestrogen-receptor-positive cells. This also is considered as an anti-cancer phytochemical. This must not be taken when pregnant.

Some More Helpful Hints to Remember

  • Always make sure to examine your breasts at least once a month. If there is anything unusual to it, see a doctor immediately.
  • Some studies have linked antiperspirants to breast cancer due to the aluminium content. If you need to use antiperspirants, choose those without aluminium.
  • Avoid wearing a bra for 14 hours or more. Those who wear bra most of the day are 50% more prone to developing breast cancer.
  • Keep stress under control. In plain and simple terms, do not get overstressed!
  • Control your weight. Most people who have breast cancers are either obese or overweight.
