One may not be able to pinpoint exactly the causes of breast pain, but there are certain factors that contribute to the occurrence of such condition. Some of these are:

  • Size of breasts. Women who have large breasts tend to suffer from non-cyclic breast pain. Whenever pain is present, it is often accompanied by feelings of pain on the shoulders, neck, and back. There are certain studies that show that women who undergo breast reduction show lesser symptoms.
  • Breast surgery. Women who undergo breast surgery usually suffer from lingering pain even after the incisions have already healed.
  • Hormones. The reproductive hormones of women have been see to be one of the causes of breast pain. There are cases where cyclic breast pain disappears when a woman becomes pregnant or when she reaches menopausal stage. This lead to the belief that there is a link between breast pain and hormones.
  • External anatomical factors. Some breast pains are effects of pain found primarily in other areas of the body like the heart, muscles or chest wall, which then affects the breasts.
  • Cysts and traumas. Breast cysts have been attributed as one of the causes of breast pain, likewise breast traumas.
  • Medications. There are certain medications that are used by women which are found to trigger breast pain. The most common medications are oral contraceptives and medications that treat infertility. Antidepressants have also been known to cause breast pain.

Causes for Breast Tenderness

  • PMS/PMT. When women suffer from pre-menstrual syndrome or pre-menstrual tension, they are bound to experience having sore or tender breasts. This usually starts a week before the menstrual period begins.
  • Estrogen therapy. Women who are undergoing menopause tend to be given this type of therapy, making them vulnerable to breast tenderness.
  • Birth control pills. Some women tend to suffer from breast tenderness when they take birth control pills. There are also women on the other hand who say that using such relieves the soreness they feel on their breasts.
  • Breastfeeding. Many women who nurse their babies experience breast tenderness and pain. However, most women also overcome the symptoms once their babies learn how to latch on.
  • Pregnancy. During the first trimester, a lot of women experience having sore breasts.

  • Exercise. This is one way to encourage lymphatic drainage, and could reduce symptoms of PMT. You can walk or run 1-3 miles a day, go dancing or swimming. You could even try mini-trampolines. Exercising regularly could greatly aid you in getting rid of breast pain since it improves circulation and helps in the draining the lymph system.
  • Avoid wearing bra for more than 12 hours. Doing so could reduce the ability of the body to drain the lymph nodes.

Foods to Avoid

  • Alcohol. Avoid alcohol since this could increase breast pain.
  • Caffeine. Avoiding this completely could help in reducing breast pain. Complete avoidance of caffeine is a must. This would include coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, and other foods that contain caffeine.
  • Sodium-based salt. This increases fluid retention and could aggravate breast tenderness. An alternative is magnesium-based sea salt.

Friendly Foods

  • Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and flax seeds. These contain high levels of essential fatty acids which could help in reducing breast tenderness.
  • Fermented soya-based foods. Go organic. Eating these foods regularly help in reducing breast pain and could balance the hormones. One example of such food is tempeh.
  • Herbal teas. One example of which is red clover.
  • Kombu seaweed. This could help in reducing breast pain. You can add this to bean dishes.
  • Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and kale. These help in balancing the hormones naturally.
