Cellulite

CelluliteWhat is Cellulite?

If there is one thing that women hate, it is cellulite. This is neither a disease nor a health condition, but for sure, it really troubles women from all over the world!

Cellulite is actually irregular pockets of fat that mostly appear in the areas around the thighs and the hips, causing the skin to look dimpled. It can be considered as a cosmetic defect. For some, they describe it as an ‘orange peel look’. You can see cellulite as a form of bulging, pitting, as well as, deformation of the skin. 90%-98% of cellulite occurs in women. It doesn’t matter whether you are thin, skinny, fat, overweight, or obese, because even the famed supermodels could have cellulite.

What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is usually seen on the buttocks, thighs, calves, arms, and stomach. As women age, the surface layers of the skin would become thinner in a progressive manner. It would also become looser. When this happens, the fat cells would move to these layers. The connective tissue walls that are found between the fat cell chambers become thinner as well, thus, causing the chambers to be enlarged. In fact, the thinning of the connective tissues is one of the major factors that contribute to the development of cellulite. It is also the one responsible for the dimpled look on the skin. Another factor that could worsen the appearance of cellulite is water retention, which is brought about by the fluctuating hormone levels in women. One symptom of this is a feeling of tightness and heaviness in affected areas like the legs.

  • Break down of the connective tissues. This usually happens when tissues get damaged from physical trauma or incorrect massage. Poor connective tissues in the body could be caused by a genetic predisposition.
  • Aging. Women who age tend to develop cellulite in various areas of the body.
  • Thin skin. The thinner skin you have, the more prone you become to cellulite.
  • Vitamin/mineral deficiency like fat metabolizing vitamins and minerals.
  • Excess fluid retention. This pushes the fat cells towards the surface of the skin, causing the appearance of cellulite.
  • Large fat cells that have also excessive storage of fat.
  • Toxins. Accumulation of toxins in the body, usually from food chemicals, smoking, coffee, tea, and medication could also lead to cellulite.

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Cellulite

Lifestyle Hints

  • Avoid consumption of toxins. This would include alcohol, cigarettes or tobacco, and caffeine.
  • Make sure that you drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Exercise! This is a very effective remedy for cellulite. Exercise helps in toning muscular areas in the body and helps in burning fat, which could lead to a reduced appearance of cellulite. Good cellulite exercises include walking, toning with weights, and jogging.

Nutrition Hints

Reduce consumption of animal fats, heated fats, dairy products, synthetic fats like margarine and semi-soft butters. Substitute flax oil, walnut, evening primrose oil, safflower, borage oil, fish oil, and olive oil. All of these must be unheated.

Supplements

  • Evening primrose oil and fish oil (three 1g capsules daily), lecithin (one 3g capsule daily), grape seed (500mg-10g daily), bioflavonoids (50mg-100mg daily). These help in minimizing the effects of aging. These help the skin supple and smooth, and at the same time they help in metabolizing excess fats stored in the body.
  • Vitamin B6 (15mg-50mg daily) and evening primrose oil. These help in reducing excess fluid retention brought about by hormonal influence.

Herbs

You can use herbs in treating cellulite. The following herbs, when taken consistently for 3 months could help in treating cellulite, as per good clinical results. Make sure that you include a good diet and exercise while taking these herbs.

  • Detox first. Make sure that you cleanse your body from toxins. This would clear congested toxic tissues on the surface of the skin. A good herbal detox regimen would include
  • Gotu kola extract (30mg 3 times daily) and horse chestnut extract (10mg-20mg 3 times daily). These herbs are really effective for the treatment of cellulite. These herbs help in strengthening damaged connective tissue and reduces the pooling of fluids in the legs.
  • Ginger (500mg 2-4 times daily), hawthorne berries (1.5-3g of leaf, dried flower, or berry). These aid poor circulation in the body.

More Helpful Hints

  • Shower massage. Try to massage areas with cellulite using a loofah every day.
  • Aromatherapy essential oils. Some of these oils include lavender, fennel, juniper, lemon, ginger, and geranium. These clear excess toxins and fluids in the body. They also increase circulation. Try to mix 2 drops of each of these oils with 100 ml of olive oil or any ‘base oil’. You can also use almond oil as your ‘base oil’. Massage the solution over the cellulite areas twice daily using a flat hand so that circulation will be increased. This also helps in fat metabolism of areas with cellulite.
