DepressionWhat is Depression?

Depressions is considered as one of the most prevalent among various emotional disorders.

Feelings may vary. One may feel extreme sadness or lead a truly miserable life.

In fact, most people find this harder to cope with compared to a regular physical ailment.

It is an unpleasant experience often attributed to various factors, both physical and mental. Its effects are all adverse and suicide is one of the major risks of such disorder.

What Causes Depression?

Depression has various causes. Often the causes are related to diet and lifestyle.

  • Depleted functioning of the adrenal glands. This is considered as one of the major causes of depression. The adrenal glands help people in coping with stressful events and when they don’t function properly, the body would not be able to handle stressful events.
  • Irregular diet habits. This causes digestive problems that lead to accumulation of fats in the body. Exessive intake of coffee, tea, cereals, chocolates, and less fruits and vegetables in the diet could lead to indigestion. When a person suffers from indigestion, there is a formation of a lot of gas in the digestive tract. When this happens, there is a compression of the diaphragm over the areas of the lungs and heart. This then reduces the supply of oxygen to the tissues and raises carbon dioxide levels in the body, which eventually results to depression.
  • Indiscriminate use of drugs. Using drugs excessively could lead to a faulty assimilation of different vitamins and minerals, leading to depression and can cause calcium and Vitamin D deficiencies as well.
  • Diabetes, along with weakness of liver due to usage of process foods, fried foods, as well as an excessive intake of fats may lead to depression too.

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Depression

In today’s times, the most common method that is resorted to by medical practitioners to treat depression is to give patients with anti-depressants. These drugs may actually provide temporary relief, however, its harmful side effects are hypersensitivity, insomnia, liver damage, hallucinations, convulsions, a confused state, and a fall in blood pressure, which by itself also result to serious effects such as blurred vision, headache, dizziness, difficulty in inhaling, and in urine retention.

There are simply three things that you must remember if you want to treat depression – diet, good body exercise, and meditation.

Diet for Depression

This is probably the most important part of an anti-depression plan. Diet has a profound effect on the body because when the body is deficient from even a single nutrient, it is enough to cause depression.

  • It is best to take foods that are rich in serotonin and norepinephrine.
  • You must eat foods that are rich in the B vitamins. These would include green vegetables, whole grains, eggs and fish.
  • You must exclude coffee, alcohol, chocolate, tea, and cola.
  • White flour products must be avoided as well. Sugar, chemical additives, food colourings, as well as white rice and strong condiments must be avoided too.
  • A three-meal diet is highly recommended. Breakfast must include fruits, milk, nuts and seeds. Lunch could be steamed vegetables, and dinner could comprise of green vegetables and all other available sprouts.

Exercise and Activity

  • When you are depressed, you can overcome this through any activity because people tend to forget their depression whenever they are doing something. It is also best to forget about yourself and consider others first and try to make other people happy.
  • Exercise helps in keeping not only the body strong, but also the mind as well. It produces some psychological and chemical changes in the body that can help in improving mental health. It helps in elevating endorphins and improves the mental health.
  • Exercise also helps in improving the functions of the autonomic nervous system. It gives one a sense of accomplishment thereby helping in erasing the negative feelings. Exercising once a day, done in a regular hour can greatly help in treating depression.

Relaxation and meditation

  • Aside from diet and exercise, you also need to control your emotions, most essential your nervous system and learn how to channel your emotional and mental activities into harmonious vibrations. You need to have a good night’s sleep most of the time. The number of hours of sleep must be sufficient and the sleeping conditions can be considered as wonderful. Once you learn of the art of meditation and relaxation through scientific processes, you will be surprised to feel that your depression started to wane.
  • You see, whenever you relax, your muscles are able to work efficiently and help in eliminating fatigue since it promotes the circulation of venous blood. When you meditate, you are also training the mind to be fixed on a certain location.
  • All your mental faculties must be focused towards a specific object of meditation. Through constant practice, this could be possible. When you are meditating, you are actually creating balance in your body. It could help the glands to reach a state of homeostasis, and when this is reached, then the state of correct balance will be achieved and will help in overcoming depression.
