Falling of hair is also known as loss of hair or hair loss. This is a disorder that has affected both men and women and often results to baldness. Sometimes, a particular area on the head is affected while there are cases where hair fall would occur at different sections on the head.

 

Hair actually grows from follicles, which are the really tiny pockets in the skin. There are cells in the body that turns amino acids into keratin, which is the main building blocks of hair. The rate at which keratin is made determines how fast or how slow hair grows. The average hair growth is approximately 1.2 cm every month. Women ages 15 – 30 tend to grow hair faster than older women.

 

What Causes Falling of Hair

Falling of hair can be attributed to different causes. Here are some of them:

  • Inadequate nutrition. This is by far considered as the primary cause of hair loss. In fact, studies have shown that when the body lacks even only a few nutrients, it is already enough to warrant falling of hair. Lack of Vitamin B6 is among the causes of hair loss. Those who lack folic acid grow completely bald. However, a liberal intake of these vitamins and minerals will soon have the hair growing normally.
  • Stress. This is another main cause of falling of hair. Stress includes anxiety, worry, and even sudden shock. Stress causes severe tension in the scalp, which hampers the supply of nutrients that the hair needs for a healthy growth. Hence, hair fall results.
  • Diseases. There are certain diseases that also cause hair fall. Among these diseases are syphilis, chronic cold, general debility, anaemia, and influenza.  These make the hair roots grow weak, hence, hair easily falls.
  • Unclean scalp. When the scalp is unclean, it could eventually lead to loss of hair. Dirt can collect on the scalp and when dirt has already accumulated, it could block the pores of the hair and weaken it.
  • Heredity. Genes are also among the factors that cause hair fall. Some people who got family members who got bald at an early age are at a higher risk for hair loss. With men, hereditary hair loss would usually appear on the front hairline, on top of the head, and on the forehead. The hair at the back of the head, at the sides, and around the ears, is the only thing that remains. With women on the other hand, hair simply thins out all over the head.

 

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of Falling of Hair

Although people would always shed hair, it becomes a disorder whenever a lot of hair would just fall off. There are even cases when hair would fall in clumps or loss of hair would occur in patches. Either way, it is very important that hair loss is treated right away.

 

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Hair Loss

Generally, taking in sufficient amount of nutrients is among the best cures for hair loss. Considering that insufficient nutrients is among the major causes of hair loss, taking in the essential nutrients is a key to getting the hair to grow normally again. One should also avoid stress, especially prolonged ones like anxiety over something, worry about unknown fears, and getting overly tired. These are all stressors that could cause you to lose hair.

Friendly Foods

  • Protein-rich foods. The hair is primarily made of protein and for a healthy hair growth, protein intake is necessary. Women usually require 60g of protein, while men require more at 80g – 90g. Adolescents, both boys and girls would require 80g – 100g of protein. Foods that are rich in protein include milk, buttermilk, soyabean, yogurt, cheese, eggs, meat, and fish.
  • Vitamin A rich foods. When the body lacks Vitamin A, it could lead to an ugly hair texture. Foods rich in Vitamin A include carrots, sweet potato, liver, cheese, cod liver oil, spinach, and mangoes.
  • Vitamin B rich foods. When the diet lacks Vitamin B, it could very much lead to various hair disorders like falling of hair and also premature graying.
  • Foods rich in inositol. Various research has shown that those who eat lots of inositol rich foods are less likely to suffer from hair disorders. Women have a lesser requirement for inositol compared to men. Although it also doesn’t follow that when you lack inositol from your diet, you will suffer hair loss. Foods rich in inositol are yeast, molasses, and liver.
  • Iodine rich foods. When the body is deficient in iodine, it could slow down circulation to the scalp and hair may then fall out, but new hair would grow very slowly.
  • Vegetables and fruits. The vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables can help in keeping the hair stronger.

Nutritionists often say that increasing protein intake, which includes liver, yeast, wheat germ, and at the same time supplementing with inositol will help keep the hair strong.

Some Useful Home Remedies for Hair Fall

  • Rub the scalp vigorously after every wash. Do this until you start to feel your scalp tingle with heat. This could help in activating the sebaceous glands in the scalp and could greatly improve blood circulation. Doing this often will make the hair grow healthier and stronger.
  • Boil dry pieces of amla and coconut oil together without any water. This would be a valuable hair tonic that will enrich hair growth. A mixture of fresh lime juice and amla juice, when used as shampoo can help in stimulating hair growth, and at the same time, could help in preventing hair loss.
  • Mix lettuce and spinach juice, and drink about half a litre a day in order to help hair growth.
  • Combine juices of alfalfa, carrot, and lettuce, and take it on a daily basis. This mixture could significantly help in hair growth.
  • Mix coconut oil, limewater, and lime juice, and apply the mixture daily onto hair in order to prevent hair loss.
  • Juice of green coriander leaves could also help in preventing loss of hair.
  • Apply coconut milk on the scalp and massage it on areas where hair loss is very apparent. It will help in promoting hair growth and will provide ample nourishment to the hair.
