IndigestionWhat is Indigestion?

Indigestion, also popularly known as dyspepsia, is actually a problem occurring in the digestive system. Sometimes, it is generally referred to as having an upset stomach. Anyone could suffer from indigestion. Young or old, male or female, all could suffer from an upset stomach.

What Causes Indigestion?

These are some of the causes of indigestion:

  • Overeating. Eating too much is one of the most common causes of indigestion. At times, you may be eating either too fast or that you are not chewing your food properly. This actually has a lot of side effects, one of which is getting hyperacidity. When you overeat, your body organs work harder too. You are actually requiring your stomach and liver, along with your kidneys to work with difficulty. When you overeat, poisons coming from food are actually absorbed by the blood again, causing much harm to the whole body system.
  • Eating hurriedly. People who eat really fast often swallow air along with the food that they eat, which would ultimately leads to indigestion.
  • Foods that trigger indigestion. Some of these are cabbage, onions, and radish. Fried foods, as well as those that are spicy trigger indigestion too.
  • Smoking too much could also aggravate the condition.
  • Constipation. This could result to abdominal pain.
  • When you drink plenty of water with meals, you could also suffer from indigestion.

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of Indigestion

Some of the symptoms of indigestion are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling full
  • Loss of appetite
  • Too much gas
  • Foul smell of breath

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Indigestion

Treating indigestion would mainly depend on being able to treat the cause. It is about not doing all those wrong habits that could lead to indigestion and about not eating the foods that bring about indigestion.

Lifestyle Changes for Indigestion

  • Eat small meals. Instead of eating large meals thrice or four times a day, try to eat much smaller meals but more frequently. This could help in making you feel full which would ultimately prevent you from overating.
  • Eat slowly. This may be hard especially if you have been used to eating really fast all the time due to a busy lifestyle. However, eating slowly allows your digestive system to process the foods effectively since it has already been broken down really well in your mouth.
  • Don’t stress yourself out. When you feel stressed, your stomach also gets to feel the same way. Chemical processes start in your body, which could actually trigger indigestion.
  • Don’t ever sleep with a full stomach. This is one of the things that you must not do so that you may prevent indigestion.
  • If you are fond of eating at night, then don’t. It would take several hours more before you would be able to empty your stomach. It is best to eat your dinner at around 6pm or 7pm.
  • Do not try to eat and drink at the same time. Consume water after meals but not immediately.

Diet for Indigestion

  • Avoid foods that cause gas. This would include cabbage and onions.
  • Cleanse your digestive tract by eating fruits. If you could make it, having a “fruit diet” could help. This means eating only fruits and nothing else for several days, usually up to four days. Fruits, due to its being fibrous, flush out foods that have been undigested and help in restoring the normal balance of the digestive system.
  • Drink lemon juice or eat lemon. This is very effective for indigestion since it dislodges unwanted substances in the stomach.
  • Eat more oranges. This has been proven to be effective in treating indigestion. It has the ability to supply the body with the nutrients that it needs. Oranges also stimulate the juices of the digestive tract which improves the overall digestion.
  • Grapes are also highly beneficial for those who suffer from indigestion.
  • You could also eat pineapple. This is very nutritious and has been known to relieve digestion.
  • Instead of drinking water during meals, eat soups or buttermilk, as they are not considered merely as liquids.
  • Have steamed vegetables, not boiled ones, so that you retain their nutritional value.
