Piles/Hemorrhoids

Piles HemorrhoidsWhat is Piles aka Hemorrhoids aka Haemorrhoids?

Piles, also called hemorrhoids or haemorrhoids, are one of those ailments that affect a lot of men and women today. It is the inflammation of the veins in the rectum. It could appear either outside or inside the rectum. Usually, when piles is found outside the rectum, it creates a lot of pain to the patient, but there is not much bleeding. On the other hand, when piles are found in the internal portion of the rectum, dark blood is often discharged. In rare cases, bleeding piles occur wherein the veins would burst.

What Causes Piles/Hemorrhoids?

  • Chronic constipation. This is the primary cause of piles. Constipation requires one to make a lot of effort and to exert pressure when passing stools. The congestion it creates usually lead to piles. Using purgatives is not the answer because this would just irritate and weaken the lining of the rectum. It just results to the inflammation and enlargement of the veins.
  • Pregnancy. Often, pregnant women tend to suffer from piles. This is because there is more weight exerted on the rectum due to the pregnancy. Hence, more pressure is also applied, which eventually results to the development of piles.
  • Sitting for a long period of time. Standing for long periods contribute to the occurrence of piles too.
  • Obesity. Gaining weight also contributes to the pressure that the rectum suffers, giving way to piles.
  • Strenuous work. Activities that involve exerting a lot of effort such as carrying heavy loads could lead to piles as well since when you exert effort, pressure is also exerted in the rectal area.
  • General weakness of body tissues.
  • Mental tension. Studies have shown that people who are always in a hurry strain whenever they pass stools. They always rush through the process of defecation. They should be more relaxed when defecating instead of rushing through the whole thing.
  • Heredity. For so long a time, patients suffering from piles were found to have ascendants who suffer from the ailment as well.
