Premature Greying of Hair

premature greying of hairWhat is Premature Greying of Hair?

As one ages, the hair naturally lose its natural colour. As a person becomes an “old man” or “old woman”, the hair would gradually turn grey. The components of the hair are the same with that of the skin. The cells that are found in the epidermis, or the outer layer of the skin, are the same cells that make up the hair. The sebaceous glands found on the scalp secrete sebum, which is actually the one that provides adequate nutrition to the hair. It is also the same substance that gives black color to the hair and provides luster. The hair’s nutrients could only come from those that are present in the bloodstream and these could not be had through external measures.

What Causes Premature Greying of Hair?

  • Wrong diet. This is one of the major causes of premature greying. When you are not eating the right kinds of foods, then it is very likely that you would suffer from premature greying of hair. Remember that it is the proper nutrients that would give your hair the life that it needs to shine.
  • Deficiency in vitamins. If you are deficient from some B vitamins, including copper, iron and iodine, you are also more prone to graying of hair.
  • Mental worries. People who are worried most of the time, create tension in the scalp. This tension then hampers the proper supply of nutrients to the hair.
  • Fear and anxiety, along with jealousy. These have detrimental effects to the hair too. When you feel these emotions, your hair tends to get dry and brittle.
  • Having an unclean scalp. An unclean scalp weakens the roots of the hair. Dirt usually block the skin pores, rendering the hair follicles unable to breathe.
  • Using hair dye, especially at the onset of greying hair.
  • Diseases. There are certain diseases that could actually cause premature hair graying. Some of these diseases are sinusitis, anaemia, chronic cold and constipation.
  • Hair oils made from factories.
  • Heredity. Those who have parents or grandparents who suffered from premature greying of hair are more likely to suffer from the same condition.

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of Premature Greying

Premature greying of hair has only two symptoms:

  • Only a few regularly thick hair growing.
  • Losing hair color before one reaches 35.

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Premature Greying

Since one of the major causes of premature graying of hair is diet, it is therefore important that one should take the right kinds of food.

Diet for Premature Greying

  • Yoghurt. Drink a litre of yoghurt mixed with one teaspoon of honey, before each meal everyday.  Yoghurt contains some of the nutrients that the hair needs in order to become really healthy.
  • Eat more seafood. These contain a lot of iodine, which is one of the essential elements that the hair needs.
  • Eat more fish. This also has a high iodine content.
  • Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits like carrots and banana. Carrots help a lot in maintaining the hair’s health.
  • Eat iron-rich foods. Iron is also one element that the hair needs, and when the body has adequate levels of iron, the hair also enjoys the benefits.

Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs for Premature Greying

  • 3 vitamins that are deemed essential in restoring the natural color of hair are pantothenic acid (10g), inositol (2000mg) and para-aminobenzoic acid (100gm).
  • B vitamins. The B-group of vitamins has always been known to aid premature graying of hair.
  • Curry leaves. Taking in curry leaves liberally could help in preventing premature hair graying. These leaves could strengthen the roots of the hair. In fact, new roots of hair will be more stronger.

Natural Hair Dye

  • Henna leaves. If you need immediate hair color, then dying hair naturally will be the best way to do it. You can opt to turn henna leaves into a paste-like substance. This would then have to be boiled in coconut oil so that you would get a darker oil. The result could then be used to dye grey hair, and turn it into black. If you opt to apply the paste directly, make sure that you wash it after a matter of few hours.
  • Concentrated tea extracts. If you prefer brown hair, then you can opt to wash your hair from concentrated tea extracts. Try to do this twice a week until you get desired results.
