Psoriasis is a chronic disease that is primarily characterized by the formation of silvery red skin, which is scaled and appears thick. One could easily see the difference between the thickness of the affected skin and the normal skin. This affects both men and women and often appears during the teenage years, usually between 15 and 30. For some, this appears either earlier or much later than the given ages. This condition is not so common during infancy and old age. While some people avoid those suffering from psoriasis, it is good to know that this skin disease is not at all contagious.

 

What Causes Psoriasis?

Although there the exact cause of psoriasis has not yet been established by modern medical system, studies have shown that the following are the ones that usually affect those suffering from psoriasis:

  • Abnormal reproduction process of the skin. Current studies have shown that psoriasis is brought about by an abnormal process by which the skin reproduces itself. The metabolism of amino-acids, which are essential for reproducing cell tissues, becomes imbalanced thereby wreaking havoc to the proper production of skill cells.
  • Heredity. People who suffer from psoriasis were known to have ascendants who suffer from the same skin disease. In fact, 30% of those who suffer from such disease have a family history of psoriasis.
  • Skin injuries. These help in expediting the development of psoriasis. These injuries include burns, cuts, minor abrasions and physical and emotional stress.
  • Infections could also lead to psoriasis.

 

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of Psoriasis

The following are the symptoms of the said skin disease:

  • Skin appears red.
  • Affected area is irritated.
  • Bright silvery scales are found on the skin.
  • Itching is also present but not severe.
  • Affected areas are usually the knees, elbows, scalp, trunk and the area behind the ears.
  • Dry lesions
  • Appearance of discs measuring 1.5 cm.

 

Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Psoriasis

Although most cases of psoriasis is hereditary, having the right diet is one of the treatments that could help the said condition.

Helpful Lifestyle Suggestions

  • Avoid taking baths too frequently, and soap must not be used.
  • Try using regular sea water for your bath. Applying sea water topically on affected areas could greatly help the condition.
  • Hot Epsom salt bath is also beneficial for psoriasis.
  • Take at least 3 full baths every week.
  • Apply a little amount of olive oil after each bath.
  • Make sure that you keep your skin clean by using a sponge.
  • Try to expose the affected areas to the sun. Studies have shown that psoriasis responds really well to sunlight. If you don’t have the time to go outdoors to expose your skin to the sun, try to use a sunlamp or any UV light.
  • Try using mud packs on the affected area. These could remove the toxins in the affected areas.
  • Have some really good rest, so as to release any nervous tension that you feel.
  • Try to get some exercise too, and as much as possible, do them regularly.

Diet for Psoriasis

  • Fasting on juices. This is one of the best remedies for psoriasis. Some of the best veggies to include are cucumber and carrots. Fruits that you can include are grapes. Just avoid citrus fruits because they have been also known to trigger insensitivities.
  • Go for a diet that includes fruits, vegetables and nuts and grains. Choose organic fruits and vegetables. These could give your body more nutrition compared to non-organic ones.
  • Avoid animal fats. These include milk, eggs and butter.
  • Processed or refined foods must also be avoided.
  • Foods that contain hydrogenated fats must not be included in the diet too.
  • Caffeine always had harmful effects in the body and therefore, coffee and tea, both of which have lots of caffeine, should not be in your daily list too.
  • Goat’s milk, home-made cottage cheese, along with yoghurt could be added to the diet, once it is ascertained that the condition has already improved.

Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs for Psoriasis

  • Try to use cabbage leaves as compress. Use the outer leaves, which are the thickest or greenest.
  • Vitamin E therapy is also beneficial for those suffering from psoriasis.
  • Lecithin (6-9 capsules daily, 2 or 3 capsules either before or after every meal).  This has been known to provide really remarkable effects in treating psoriasis.
