Sinusitis refers to a condition that occurs whenever the mucous membrane that lines the paranasal sinuses get inflamed. This usually follows colds or influenza. At times, it occurs subsequently to an infection. There are instances when the germs that the body gets rid of find their way into the sinuses, which eventually lead to sinusitis.


The sinuses comprise the chambers that are found in the bones, which are located in the face and head area. These sinuses could be found right above the eyes, on both sides of the nose, just right under the cheekbone, and also behind the nose. The sinuses reduce the weight of the skull and also play an important role in giving resonance to one’s voice.


What Causes Sinusitis?

  • Sinus passages get congested. This condition has an underlying cause, which is catarrh. This is brought about by the over-secretion of the mucous in the membranes of the nose, head and throat. The toxins found in the blood cause the irritation.

  • Constant, at times excessive sneezing
  • Blockage of one or both nostrils
  • Runny nose
  • Pressure around the head, face and eyes
  • Headaches
  • Feelings of discomfort in the forehead, face and below the eyes
  • Lack of appetite
  • Low grade fever
  • Toothache
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Voice changes due to blocked nose


Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Sinusitis

One of the best remedies in treating sinusitis is to correct a faulty diet and living a healthy lifestyle.

Helpful Lifestyle Suggestions

  • Get adequate sleep. As much as possible, get an undisturbed sleep to fully energize the body.
  • Get some quality fresh air.
  • Avoid using perfumes since these could irritate the nasal passages and could lead to colds and sneezing.

Diet for Sinusitis

  • Make sure that you take a balanced diet. A lot of people who suffer from sinusitis are known to suffer from acidity too, hence, diet must be more alkaline.
  • Reduce salt intake. As much as possible, salt should minimized. With high salt intake, calcium is expelled from the body and also accumulates water in the tissues.
  • When one is suffering from fever due to sinusitis, it is best recommended to stay away from solid foods. Fresh vegetable and fruit juices that are diluted with water should be taken.
  • Once condition gets better, a diet consisting of the 3-basic food groups could be taken. Seeds, fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables are recommended.
  • Fried foods have to be avoided.
  • White flour and sugar, cakes, candies, rice and macaroni products must be avoided too.
  • Used ghee and butter sparingly.
  • Avoid sugar as sweetener, use honey instead.
  • Make sure that all ingredients you would be using for every meal are fresh.
  • Eat a lot of vegetables.
  • Eat a lot of fruits too, except for those fruits that belong to the citrus family. Examples of which are lime, lemon, orange and grapefruit.
  • Take milk liberally. Milk is one good source of calcium, which is an essential element that could help in overcoming tissue inflammation.
  • Go for foods that are rich in Vitamin A. This vitamin strengthens the body against sinus and cold. This helps in building healthy mucous membranes found in the throat and head. Egg yolk, whole milk, pumpkin, carrots, curds, mango, papaya, tomato and leafy vegetables are all good sources of Vitamin A.

Vitamins, Supplements and Herbs for Sinusitis

  • Vitamin A (25,000iu daily). This is the recommended dosage for individuals suffering from sinusitis.
  • Vitamin C (1g daily, taken 500mg at a time). Patients suffering from sinusitis benefit from Vitamin C.
  • Garlic and onion. These may not smell good but are known to be very effective in treating sinusitis. They relieve mucous congestion. Beginning with small doses of these herbs, and increasing them gradually is the best way to go. These herbs could also be added to regular meals.
  • Carrot juice (300ml), which is high in Vitamin A could also benefit sinusitis sufferers. You can combine this with beet and cucumber juice (100ml each). You could also combine spinach juice (200ml) with it.

Other Helpful Remedies

  • One good treatment for sinusitis is water treatment. You can apply cold application and hot application on the sinus area. Alternate application. Patients will surely benefit from such.
  • Nasal inhalation. Inhaling steam for around 5 minutes every hour will help in giving relief to patients.
