Ways to Take Care of Your Joints

Sore joints are a common problem that can plague people from all walks of life.  It can have a large impact on our daily activities (or lack thereof) and on mobility.  Over time, and especially if mobility is limited, this can lead to a variety of other issues such as weight gain and an overall lowered mood.  If you suffer from joint pain, here are some great options to help you regain control of your day.


Exercise might seem like the last thing you want to attempt if you’re feeling sore, but keeping your body in good working order is crucial to avoiding further issues.  Exercise can also help improve the muscles supporting the joint giving you trouble, which generally leads to a decrease in issues.  Identify the muscles around the joint and research exercises that will specifically target that area.  Also stick to an exercise routine that will help keep you at your ideal weight; this will go a long way towards avoiding an increased difficulty especially if the problem joint is in your legs.


Hot and cold therapy can be a wonderful thing.  Cold compresses will help to decrease circulation, which means that it can help reduce inflammation around the targeted area, while heat tends to soothe and ease the pain around the problem area.  Experiment and see which works best for you.


Massage is a great way to relax, and if you’re relaxed you’re much more able to cope with whatever other issues come your way.  Your therapist should also be able to identify and treat the muscles around the joint giving you trouble, which, with regular treatment, can help reduce the pain associated with that joint.


Particularly if you’re getting enough exercise, it’s also important to get enough rest.  During the times when you rest or sleep, your body has the opportunity to repair itself, so relaxing can not only give you the chance to regain strength, but also take the weight off of your joints and give them a well deserved break.


Steam showers are lovely for a variety of reasons, including helping with joint pain.  The heat alone will help reduce inflammation, rehydrate your body in its entirety and also work towards offering you a more relaxed state of mind.  This combination of factors can be an enticing way to help reduce joint pain that you can apply regularly.


A soak in the tub (and especially with the addition of Epsom salts) is another great way to not only take pressure off the joint, but to help alleviate swelling and pain.  It’s also a great way to catch up on a good book or take a time out from your busy week.

Stretching regularly is another way to strengthen muscles and keep your body supple enough to withstand the impacts that the world has on it.  Yoga is an option or just a daily stretch at home may be enough to keep all of your working parts in order.
